Start here: new to Arabic?ابدأ هنا: جديد على العربية؟
Arabic is read and written from right to left. It has 28 letters, and most letters join to the next one, so a letter changes its shape a little at the start, middle or end of a word: بـ ـبـ ـب.تُقرأ العربية وتُكتب من اليمين إلى اليسار، وحروفها ثمانية وعشرون، ومعظمها يتصل بما بعده، فيتغيّر شكل الحرف قليلاً في أول الكلمة ووسطها وآخرها: بـ ـبـ ـب.
Short vowels are small marks above or below the letters. On this site most texts carry them, so you can read every word:الحركات القصيرة علامات صغيرة فوق الحروف أو تحتها، ومعظم نصوص الموقع مشكولة لتقرأ كل كلمة:
Long vowels are letters: ا = aa, و = uu, ي = ii (بَاب bāb, نُور nūr, كَبِير kabīr).الحركات الطويلة حروف: الألف والواو والياء (بَاب، نُور، كَبِير).
Where to begin: follow the learning voyage on the home page. Start with the Harbour of Words and the Common Words, then the Tales (tap a coloured word to see its meaning), then Understanding and Spelling. Use the button at the top to switch the site between English and Arabic: in English you will also see the meaning of grammar terms and a short reason after each answer.من أين تبدأ؟ اتبع رحلة التعلّم في الصفحة الرئيسية: ابدأ بمرفأ المفردات والكلمات الشائعة، ثم الحكايات (المس الكلمة الملوّنة لترى معناها)، ثم الفهم والإملاء. وبالزر في أعلى الصفحة تبدّل لغة الموقع بين الإنجليزية والعربية.

1. Your path: four levels١. طريقك: أربعة مستويات
Language programmes usually move through an introductory stage, then beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, each split into shorter stages. Words grow from a few hundred at the start to about two thousand at the advanced level. Here is how this site follows the same road.تسير برامج تعليم العربية عادةً من مرحلة تمهيدية، ثم مستوى مبتدئ فمتوسط فمتقدم، وكل مستوى مقسّم إلى مراحل أقصر. وتزداد الكلمات من بضع مئات في البداية إلى نحو ألفي كلمة في المستوى المتقدم. وهكذا يسير هذا الموقع على الطريق نفسه:
- The Harbours Voyageرحلة المرافئ
- Thousand and One Nights; Kalila, level 2ألف ليلة وليلة، وكليلة (المستوى ٢)
- Spelling: hamza, tanweenالإملاء: الهمزة والتنوين
- Common words, units 11–20الكلمات الشائعة: الوحدات ١١–٢٠
- Sentence Workshop: kāna and innaورشة الجملة: كان وإنّ
- Traveller’s talk in Saudi dialectمحادثات السائح باللهجة السعودية
2. The four skills, in order٢. المهارات الأربع بترتيبها
Start with your ears. Hearing Arabic sounds again and again makes pronouncing and writing them easier. Learn whole expressions from real situations, such as greeting someone, before taking them apart into words and sounds. The aim is to talk with people, not only to know rules. Reading and writing grow stronger at the higher levels. Recorded readings of this site’s texts will be added soon.
3. How to use an Arabic dictionary٣. كيف تبحث في المعجم العربي
Most Arabic words grow from a root of three letters. Many classic dictionaries are arranged by root, so first find the root, then the word under it:تعود أكثر الكلمات العربية إلى جذر من ثلاثة أحرف، وكثير من المعاجم مرتّب على الجذور؛ فابحث أولاً عن الجذر، ثم عن الكلمة تحته:
How to find the root of any wordكيف تستخرج جذر أي كلمة؟
Turn the word into a present-tense verb, then drop the present-tense letter at its start (يـ). What is left is the root:حوّل الكلمة إلى فعل مضارع، ثم احذف حرف المضارعة من أوله (الياء)، فيبقى لك الجذر:
Then look the root up in the dictionary: all its family of words is listed under it.ثم ابحث عن الجذر في المعجم، فتجد تحته أسرة الكلمة كلها.
Other dictionaries are alphabetical by the whole word; bilingual dictionaries give the meaning in your language; picture dictionaries show the meaning with images. This site’sومعاجم أخرى ترتّب الكلمة كما تُكتب على الحروف، والمعاجم الثنائية تعطيك المعنى بلغتك، والمعاجم المصوّرة تعرضه بالصور. أما dictionaryمعجم هذا الموقع is bilingual and alphabetical, ignoring “al-”.فثنائي اللغة، مرتّب على الحروف بعد «ال».

4. Ways to learn a new word٤. طرق تعلّم الكلمة الجديدة
Guess the meaning from the sentence around it, then check.خمّن المعنى من الجملة حولها، ثم تحقّق.
Find its root and its family of words.ابحث عن جذرها وأسرة كلماتها.
Ask your teacher or an Arabic speaker how it is used.اسأل معلّمك أو أحد أهل العربية عن استعمالها.
A quick sketch beside the word helps memory.رسم سريع بجانب الكلمة يقوّي الذاكرة.
Use translation at first, then try to think in Arabic.استعن بالترجمة أولاً، ثم حاول أن تفكّر بالعربية.
5. Days and months٥. الأيام والشهور
The week begins on Sunday in most Arab countries; Friday is the weekly holiday. Two calendars are used: the Hijri (lunar) calendar and the Gregorian calendar, whose months have two sets of names.يبدأ الأسبوع بيوم الأحد في أكثر البلاد العربية، والجمعة عطلة الأسبوع. ويُستعمل تقويمان: التقويم الهجري القمري، والتقويم الميلادي الذي لشهوره مجموعتان من الأسماء.
